Rainbow Brisbane

Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane is quickly stepping its way up the ladder, giving Sydney and Melbourne a run for their money.  Regarded as the third best city in Australia, Brisbane is growing swiftly into a multicultural hotpot, giving the big boys something to watch out for, as it has firmly granted itself a place on the “hippest world cities” list.  It has one of the fastest growing economies in Australia and has had an equally fast growth spurt in its population.  Within the rapid expansion of its populous, the LGBT crowd has adapted and integrated perfectly.  This cool bunch are not just sitting back taking it easy, they’re positively reclined.

There is plenty to do in this charming part of the world and its yonder regions.  Southbank Parklands would be a great place to start your day. It’s jam-packed with restaurants, coffee shops, lagoons, a desert-island style beach, blossoming gardens, and picnic areas.  With choices galore, one 360 degree turn will leave you quizzical as to where to head next.  For a peak at some of the most iconic sights simmer down with a relaxing trip on the Brisbane River.  Kangaroo Point Cliff, City Canter and Story Bridge are amongst the great photo opportunities to be had aboard.  For a great dining experience and top of Brisbane’s culinary seafood offerings is, “Kookaburra River Queens”.  Enjoy a succulent seafood platter with a luxurious deck setting whilst taking in the passing attractions.

Once back on dry land enjoy the experience of being at one with nature at the “Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary”.  Indigenous animals are camouflaged amongst the flora and fauna, all nesting in their natural habitats.  Koalas, Kangaroos, Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, Possums, Dingoes, and various species of large toothed , long tongued reptiles are just a few of the rare animals to be caught on camera.  For $16 you can go home with a professional photo of you and a cuddly koala as a little personalised memorabilia to sit on the mantelpiece.

Shop ‘til you drop in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall and see all the fashionistas strut their stuff in this pedestrian plaza.  Find everything at your fingertips from local and international labels, thrift shops, hair salons, spas, and cinemas.  You could easily spend an entire day here pampering yourself with all the services on offer, so set some time aside for this world famous arcade before heading home.

“The Sportsman Hotel” located in Spring Hill is the only totally gay owned and operated hotel in the city.  The downstairs “Mineshaft Bar” hosts plenty of drag shows and leather events and other unclassified things that go bump in the night.  This is definitely up there on the popular list with the locals.  Fluffy @ Family Nightclub is another hot nightspot hosting the best Sunday evening party in Brisbane with a “gay as it gets” policy.  Despite its name, this is not a family nightclub, nor an advisable family outing, so keep the kids at home for this one.

In June the famous Pride Festival comes to town and the city transforms itself into a hallmark of colourful regalia.  The festival is the country’s third largest LGBT event and a hard act to beat so well worth the visit if you’re looking for an all out experience.
